Calhoun, LA (June 23, 2025) – A motor vehicle accident occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025, shortly after 9:00 p.m., when a two‑vehicle collision on Louisiana Highway 151 just south of Highway 144 claimed the life of 36‑year‑old Rachel Rushing of West Monroe. At least one person was hurt in the crash, which also left a passenger critically injured and required immediate medical intervention. Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating the incident soon after the crash.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2015 GMC Sierra, driven by 27‑year‑old Noah Short and headed south on La Hwy 151, crossed the centerline into the path of a northbound 2016 Nissan Sentra operated by Rushing. The vehicles collided head‑on in the northbound lane. Rushing, who was properly restrained, died at the scene. A front seat passenger in the Nissan, also properly restrained, was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Short was not wearing a seat belt and walked away uninjured. Impairment is not presently suspected; however, routine toxicology samples were collected. The investigation remains ongoing.
We offer our sympathies to the family of the victim who died in this accident.
Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents in Louisiana
In 2022, Louisiana witnessed more than 850 fatalities resulting from auto accidents. This alarming figure sets a record surpassing the previous high set in 2007. Sadly, year after year, innocent lives are lost in crashes throughout the state.
Several factors contribute to the prevalence of fatal car accidents in Louisiana. Firstly, the state's large rural population increases the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, Louisiana experiences a higher-than-average presence of intoxicated drivers, with alcohol-related incidents claiming the lives of 4.64 individuals per 100,000.
Beyond drunk driving, distractions, fatigue, and speeding also play significant roles. If you've lost a loved one due to another's negligence, contacting a wrongful death lawyer in Monroe is vital to understanding your legal rights and options.
