Officials reported that the pickup truck, driven by a juvenile, was traveling northbound on North 7th Street when the pedestrian, identified as 59-year-old David Anthony Garner, attempted to cross. The driver was unable to stop in time, and the truck struck Garner.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided aid, but Garner’s injuries were severe. He did not survive the collision. Police noted that impairment is not suspected at this time. However, routine toxicology samples were collected as part of standard investigative procedure.
Police directed traffic around the area while investigators reviewed the events leading up to the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of David Anthony Garner during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Louisiana
Pedestrian accidents remain a serious concern in communities across Louisiana, including West Monroe. As more residents walk to nearby stores, neighborhoods, and transit stops, the risk of a collision increases—especially near busy intersections. Drivers and pedestrians share responsibility for safety, but pedestrians are far more vulnerable because they have no protection during impact.
Crashes involving pedestrians often lead to devastating injuries or, as seen in this tragedy, a wrongful death. Many factors contribute to pedestrian accidents, including low visibility, distracted driving, speeding, and limited crossing areas. Even when a driver does not intend to cause harm, a single moment of misjudgment can lead to life-changing consequences.
Because pedestrians lack the safety features found in vehicles, they are susceptible to severe injuries such as:
- Head and brain injuries, including concussions or traumatic brain injuries
- Spine injuries, which may cause long-term mobility issues
- Broken bones, especially in the legs, arms, and ribs
- Internal injuries, which can rapidly become life-threatening
- Severe cuts and bruising, often caused by impact with the roadway
Families affected by fatal pedestrian crashes often face emotional and financial hardship. Medical bills, funeral costs, lost income, and grief can overwhelm loved ones. Speaking with a Louisiana wrongful death lawyer can help families understand their rights and determine whether another party’s actions contributed to the crash. A lawyer can investigate the scene, review police findings, speak with witnesses, and help the family move forward.
