Homer, LA – Two Killed in Head-On Crash on LA Hwy 2 Near Arizona Rd

Homer, LA (May 12, 2026) – A head-on crash on Louisiana Highway 2 in Claiborne Parish claimed two lives. Emergency units responded to the collision near Arizona Road at approximately 10:25 a.m. on Monday, May 11.

Donyull White, 48, of Shreveport, was driving a 2014 BMW 528i westbound on Louisiana Highway 2 when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a 2014 Honda Accord traveling eastbound. Shirley Mitchell, 72, of Homer, was driving the Honda at the time of the crash.

White was pronounced dead at the scene. Mitchell was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries and later died from those injuries.

Investigators do not suspect impairment played a role in the accident. However, authorities collected toxicology samples and submitted them for analysis. The reason the BMW crossed the centerline remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Donyull White and Shirley Mitchell. May they find comfort and strength during this incredibly difficult time.

What Damages Are Available in a Fatal Accident in Homer, LA?

In Louisiana, surviving family members may be eligible to seek several types of damages after a loved one dies in a fatal crash in Homer. These damages fall into two main categories: survival action damages and wrongful death damages.

In this regard, understanding the difference between the two can help families make informed decisions about their legal options after a tragic loss.

A survival action allows the deceased person's estate to recover damages that the victim experienced between the time of the crash and the moment of death. This can include physical pain and suffering, emotional distress, and any medical expenses incurred before passing.

A wrongful death claim, on the other hand, compensates surviving family members for their own losses. Under Louisiana law, eligible survivors may include spouses, children, parents, and siblings, depending on the circumstances.

These claims can cover funeral and burial costs, lost financial support, and the loss of love, companionship, and guidance that the deceased provided. Louisiana law prioritizes certain family members over others when determining who can file, so understanding that order matters when pursuing a claim.

Deadlines are another critical consideration. Louisiana has one of the shortest statutes of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims in the country: just one year from the date of the accident.

Missing that deadline can permanently affect a family's ability to pursue available options, making it essential to seek legal guidance as soon as possible after a fatal crash.

Families dealing with sudden loss often face mounting financial pressure alongside their grief. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the sudden loss of income can create serious hardship.

A wrongful death lawyer can review the circumstances of the crash, explain what damages may apply, and handle communications with insurance companies so families can focus on what matters most.
