West Monroe, LA (October 6, 2026) – On Monday, October 5, authorities reported a wreck on I-20 westbound near mile marker 116 in West Monroe.

According to initial reports, the accident involved an 18-wheeler and a red Toyota truck.

Emergency units were sent to the highway to assist those involved. The full scope of the injuries has not been disclosed.

The cause of the accident continues to be investigated by officials.

We wish a strong recovery to those injured.

Insurance Layers That May Apply in Truck Claims in West Monroe, LA

One of the first insurance layers that come with a crash in Louisiana is that auto policies are required to include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage unless the policyholder rejects it in writing on a state-approved form. That coverage can apply when the driver at fault has little or no insurance. A rejection form that is missing or filled out incorrectly can affect whether the coverage exists, so it is worth checking the paperwork rather than assuming.

Commercial trucks add another layer. Many for-hire carriers must carry at least $750,000 in liability insurance under federal rules, with higher minimums for certain hazardous cargo. A standard Louisiana policy for a passenger vehicle has a much lower minimum of $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident for bodily injury. Whether a particular truck falls under the federal minimum depends on how it is used and what it carries, and some carriers also hold excess policies.

For drivers in West Monroe who share US-165 with high traffic, the practical question is typically which policies are actually in play. Medical payments coverage, health insurance, and the driver's own UM coverage may all come into the picture alongside the carrier's policy.

In these cases, our Monroe car accident lawyers can request the declarations pages, check whether UM coverage was properly waived, and explain how several policies may fit together. That review can also show how insurer reimbursement claims, such as those from a health plan, may change the amount a person ultimately keeps.

Sorting out which insurance policies may apply is usually the first practical question after a truck is involved, but it can be hard to manage it all alone.
