Winn Parish, LA (October 21, 2026) – On Tuesday, October 20, a small SUV and an 18-wheeler were involved in a wreck on US-84 near Crossroads Church in Winn Parish, deputies said.
According to initial reports, the SUV driver was airlifted to Ochsner Hospital in Shreveport. The 18-wheeler driver was taken by ambulance to Hardtner Medical Center.
It is not yet clear how the two vehicles came together. Authorities continue to investigate.
Our thoughts are with both drivers as they receive medical care.
How Long Do Trucking Companies Keep Driver Records in Winn Parish, LA?
In Louisiana, federal safety rules generally require trucking companies to keep a driver's records of duty status and supporting documents for six months, and daily vehicle inspection reports for three months. After that, carriers are no longer required to keep them, and the paperwork may be discarded. That timeline can run out well before a lawsuit is ever filed.
Louisiana gives most people two years to file a lawsuit over injuries that happen on or after July 1, 2024, which is double the old one-year deadline Louisiana used to have.
A two-year window is still far longer than those retention periods, so a gap can open between the day a record is cleared out and the day a claim is filed.
Other evidence can also change quickly. Electronic logging data, dispatch records, maintenance files, and shipping documents each follow different retention periods, and vehicles may be repaired or returned to service. Written preservation requests sent early, typically with the help of a truck accident lawyer, ask a carrier to keep specific records before they are routinely cleared out.
